How to Create a Google Ads Account

So you’ve decided to dive into the magical world of Google Ads.

Most Welcome!

Whether you\’re a freelancer, a business owner, or someone who just likes pressing buttons to feel powerful, the first step is always the same: create a Google Ads account.

Sounds simple, right? Well… it should be. But Google, being Google, likes to sprinkle in a few surprises.

Let me walk you through it, and we’ll keep it fun (and it is totally beginner-friendly).

First, the FAQs You Wish Someone Told You Earlier

 1. What do I need to create a Google Ads account?

Good news! There aren’t any complex requirements! As long as you have a Gmail ID (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?), you’re ready to create your Google Ads account.

That’s it. No credit score checks, no secret handshake, no 15-minute onboarding call with Gary from Google HQ.

2. Can I use my work email instead of Gmail?

Yes! And you probably should if you\’re doing this professionally.

Let’s say your email is [email protected] and you don’t want to use your old Gmail account from 2012 (suppose [email protected]). You can turn your work email into a Google account like this:

To do this:

  • Head over to Google and search for “Create Google Account.”
  • When signing up, click the option that says “Use my current email address instead.”
  • Enter your work email (e.g., [email protected]), and verify it. Hurray, you’ve got a Google account with your work email.
  • Use this Google account to sign into Google Ads.

Now you look all professional and stuff.

3. Can I create a Google Ads account for my team or co-founders?

Heck yes. One account, many users. Invite your co-founder, your media buyer, your intern, your dog (okay, maybe not the dog), however, as long as they have a Google account.

Unlike Gmail, a Google Ads account allows multiple users. You can add as many team members as you want (as long as they have Google accounts) without giving them access to your Gmail or personal data.

4. Can I create multiple Google Ads accounts?

Absolutely, and many do. Freelancers often create separate accounts for each client due to different billing needs or data confidentiality. Even large companies like Uber create multiple ad accounts by region or campaign type (e.g., branding, app installs, search). Each Google Ads account supports one currency and one billing setup, which is why multiple accounts are sometimes necessary.

Let’s say you’re a freelancer juggling three clients. You don’t want Client A peeking into Client B’s budget or data. Solution? Create separate ad accounts under the same email.

Even giants like Uber do it:

  • One for India 🇮🇳
  • One for the US 🇺🇸

Let’s Create Your Google Ads Account (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Go to ads.google.com

Click Start now and NOT on “Sign in” unless you’ve done this before.

You might see a fancy offer:

If it\’s your first time, you might see a promotion like “Get ₹2000 credit” or “Choose your offer and get up to $1800 in ad credit.” This promo is great, but it comes with conditions:

Tempting? Yes.
A trap? Kinda.

To use the credit, you’ll have to:

  • Spend that amount first.
  • Do it within 60 days.
  • Enter billing info upfront.

If you just want to set up your account, skip the offer. We’re not here for strings attached. Yet.

Step 2: Avoid the Smart Campaign Setup

After clicking “Start now,” you’ll be asked for your business name. This is the Smart Campaign setup, an automated mode intended for total beginners.

But if you\’re aiming to learn and run expert-level campaigns, this is not the right path.

Look for the option that says:

“Switch to Expert Mode”

If you don’t see it immediately, search for buttons like “Skip guided setup” or “Create an account without a campaign.” Google sometimes shows different versions depending on your location, so keep an eye out.

Step 3: Create an Account Without a Campaign

You’ll now be prompted to choose a campaign objective. But since we’re only setting up the account (not launching a campaign), choose:

“Create an account without a campaign”

Step 4: Confirm Your Account Settings

You’ll be asked to select:

  • Country – This will affect billing and available payment methods.
  • Time Zone – Can’t be changed later, so choose carefully.
  • Currency – Critical! If you choose USD but want to pay in INR, you’ll need a new account. So, don’t pick USD if your clients pay in INR or AUD.

💡 Tip: Your billing options vary by country. In India, you’ll see choices like UPI and Net Banking. In the US, it’s usually credit cards and PayPal. If you’re setting up your account in Australia, we have some good news. Google Ads supports AUD with flexible options like credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex), direct debit, manual prepayments, and even monthly invoicing for eligible accounts.

Once you’ve selected your settings, hit Submit to finalize your account setup

Step 5: Your Account is Ready!

You’ll now see your Google Ads Account ID. Indeed, a beautiful string of numbers (a unique number) that marks your arrival in the world of digital advertising. That means you’re now inside the Google Ads dashboard.

To log in again:

  • Go to ads.google.com
  • Click Sign in
  • Enter your email & password
  • You’ll land back in the dashboard, ready to roll

You’ll see options like “Campaigns,” “Keywords,” and “Budgets.” Don’t worry, we’ll unpack all of that in the next post.

Optional: What If Google Asks for a Credit Card?

Sometimes, even if you skip campaigns, Google might still ask for a card.

Here are your options:

  • Option A: Add a card. They might do a ₹1 or $1 auth charge, but won’t spend anything unless you run a campaign.
  • Option B: Rage quit. Delete the account. Try again. (Hey, sometimes this actually works.)

Either way, don’t panic. We’re still in control.

Final Thoughts

Creating a Google Ads account is simple, but navigating Google’s interface and avoiding common traps (like Smart Campaigns or incorrect billing setup) can be tricky. With this guide, you\’re now ready to create your account the right way and move on to mastering campaigns, strategy, and ad optimization.
